Production & Operations


The Improvement Engineer is responsible for rolling mill automation, training, troubleshooting major failures, software back-up, research, development, improvement and testing of electrical/electronic components, equipment and systems. The position works closely with production and maintenance personnel, as well as management to ensure continuous operation and continuous improvement of equipment and processes.  The position reports to the Maintenance General Foreman.



  • BS in Electronics, Networking, Automation or Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience required; heavy industrial or steel industry preferred
  • 5 years’ experience required; Steel Industry preferred
  • Strong knowledge of AC/DC controls and motors
  • Ability to oversee electrical products, equipment, systems, etc. including elements of design, implementation, maintenance, and operational and safety standards
  • Prior experience in programming PLCs in a manufacturing setting
  • Solid understanding of computer programming and software development
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems and perform complex system tests
  • Must be comfortable using MS Office, SAP, IBA and CAD
  • Must be willing to work in both an office setting and get hands on in the field
  • Must be able to translate operator requests into actionable automation items


Desired Skills:

  • Advanced programming experience on the following platforms:
    • GE innovation series controllers
    • Toshiba NV controllers
    • RX3i controllers
    • GE Genius Block I/O networks
    • IBA Analytical tools
    • Siemens S7/TIA
  • Commission systems
  • Solid understanding of computer programming and software development
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems and perform complex system tests
  • Creative thinking skills
  • Detail-oriented personality
  • Excellent manual dexterity
  • Ability to communicate well with operators, maintenance, and members of the leadership team


Desired technical knowledge:

  • A/C Motor tuning
  • A/C High and Medium voltage GE and ABB drives
  • GE Cimplicity, HMI software
  • Computer networking
  • Cisco switching/router configuration
  • Siemens S7/TIA Programming


Principal Accountabilities:

  1. Lead initiatives to improve HMI based on operational needs
  2. Lead initiatives to improve automation stability
  3. Lead action plan items to help eliminate delays due to automation and automated processes
  4. Be engaged in the process to find and address opportunities for increased throughput, improved instrumentation, improved reliability of existing instrumentation, and improved system response to instrument feedback.
  5. Continue to improve the alarm reporting and functionality for the operator and maintenance.
  6. Collect, analyze, and report asset performance and work with teams to implement methods to improve performance and sustain existing efficiencies.
  7. Develop solutions and provide recommendations for major equipment modifications, renovations, installations, additions, and replacements to facilitate continuous improvement.
  8. Support planning and scheduling standard processes to effectively execute all down-days and outages.
  9. Participate in Failure Analysis on maintenance and operational issues.
  10. Assist with Annual Action Planning process.
