Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of experience in warehouse, dispatch and/or logistics operations OR HS Diploma / GED and 7 years of like experience.
  • Experience with production management systems, such as QMOS or SAP and with Transportation Management Systems (TMS) such as Transporeon or Oracle, Princeton TMX preferred.
  • Requires general knowledge of tender roll processes, department of transportation freight regulations, and securement processes.
  • Requires competency in freight cost control, transportation management system table and logic maintenance, delivery quality and efficiency.  
  • Knowledge of railroad sites, freight rates, and procedures.
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure, integrated manner to solve complex problems on a daily basis.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills (both verbal and written), basic mathematics, and strong critical thinking.
  • familiarity with North American geography, and general knowledge of DOT requirements.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge, knowledge and experience with SAP is preferred and ERP systems is required.

Your Purpose

You will be responsible for local carrier management, truck and rail freight procurement in alignment with customer and commercial requirements and optimize loading schedules for the steel mill. You will act as the liaison with carriers, external customers, commercial and mill operations teams. You will also manage customer exceptions and freight claims and assist in the deployment of the Gerdau freight strategy. You will report directly to the Fulfillment Manager and supervise one Dispatcher.

 

You will define which carrier will be assigned to a given load based on cost, service level agreement and capabilities. You will coordinate product movement between mills, customers and suppliers utilizing various software applications to support Mill Logistics operations.

 

Your Work

  • Maintain safety records and communicate safety or driver concerns with carriers.
  • Work closely with inside sales team (maintain regular communication with sales team to ensure cost and service goals are achieved).
    • Validate delivery and shipment documents and communicate with Sales.
    • Prioritize load tendering based on communications received by Sales, operational capabilities, and carrier capacity following order management guidelines.
  • Work closely with carriers.
    • Guarantee truck availability according to earliest and latest delivery dates specified by customers.
    • Schedule customer pick-up appointments to ensure on time delivery for customers.
  • Dispatch scheduling all transportation modes, internal and external customers.
    • Validate and manage shipments in SAP.
    • Tender shipments through transportation management software or direct tender if priority dictates.
    • Monitor the shipment tendering process to ensure system is accurately tendering according to established criteria.
    • Generate internal transfer orders utilizing transfer Purchase Order generated by Mills or Downstream locations.
  • Manage freight expense for location.
    • Manage and confirm detention for loading times that exceed contracted maximum loading times.
    • Provide ongoing rate evaluations and apply updates to Transporeon Freight Corporate Partnership Program which includes budget maximum, tender roll maximums, and other system tables to optimize freight management.
    • Apply premium freight to offers when capacity is limited, shipments to a single location are high, or loads are extremely urgent.
  • Coordinate return movements due to order/shipment errors or customer complaints.
  • Coordinate back-haul, pre-loading, pre-staging programs, or other programs that may exist at the specific mill.
  • Monitor and perform periodic audit of freight payment process.
  • Assist non-Logistics processes with special outbound/inbound moves when needed.
  • Support mill inventory management functions including cycle counting, aged inventory management and production reconciliation.
  • Manage customer exceptions and freight claims gathering further details and performing initial investigation.
  • Support Mill and Regional Logistics managers’ carrier management and freight negotiation activities.
    • Assess current freight rates according to the market.
    • Identify and evaluate carriers in the market.
    • Prepare market intelligence analysis of local market.
  • Address Customer or Carrier questions about freight scheduled or in-transit.
  • Maintain and grow partnerships with carriers by periodically checking in, reviewing scorecards, or discussing growth possibilities.
  • Work with and coordinate with other locations through dispatch, SAP, or TMS training, best practices, back-hauls and general market conditions
