Basic Function:
Responsible for the supervision of assigned shift personnel engaged in hot metal forging operations and procedures, including equipment maintenance, forging, inspection, and packaging of all railroad spike products.
Nature and Scope:
Reporting directly to the Plant Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the supervision of an assigned shift of production personnel engaged in hot metal forging operations, including forging, inspecting, packing, and loading of railroad spike products, and maintenance of related equipment. Responsible for continuous operation of plant spike forging machines and related support equipment.
Confer with Plant Manager for special instructions, maintenance activities and other information. Work from verbal instructions to plan and organize work, in accordance with availability of material, personnel, and equipment. Work closely with Spike Machine Operators; checking work in process and reviewing inspector reports to insure adherence to product/customer order quality and quantity specifications. Anticipate or investigate production delays, inadequate work performance and take necessary corrective action with limits of established practice and policy.
Perform preventive maintenance check at beginning of shift with each machine operator; arrange for, assist or perform maintenance of machines and equipment as required. Maintain maintenance log and post maintenance activities in accordance with standard operating procedures, occasionally grind machine dies or headers and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper alignment and functioning of machine parts.
Assist and participate in the implementation, training, testing, and administration of division skill based pay system. Incumbent is responsible for insuring that all employees receive training materials and participate in job rotation assignments to provide employees with the skills and training necessary to progress upward through the skill based pay system. Communication skills and managerial support are critical to the success of this program.
Reassign and rotate personnel as skill based pay system and work load necessitates. Check and inspect work areas and related yard operations. Keep Plant Manager advised of production progress, maintenance activities, and other pertinent information. Make effective recommendations to meet changing requirements.
Direct, assist, advise, and train production and maintenance personnel, as necessary, to ensure proper performance of duties and to maintain flow of work through the plant. Enforce safety rules, eliminate hazards, maintain discipline; reporting violations to Plant Manager and administering discipline in accordance with established policy. Maintain production records, noting reasons for production delays, and production turn crew sheets with personnel job change notations, number of kegs produced and total machine production hours for use in determining payroll and incentive earnings. See that work areas and equipment are kept in clean and orderly fashion. Consult with Plant Manager on critical problems, unusual conditions and situations.

- Maintain product quality within prescribed parameters.
- Maintain minimum waste and scrap through effective machine setup and operation.
- Provide technical and educational training for employees in support of the skill based pay program.
- Maintain work environment in accordance with established guidelines for housekeeping, equipment maintenance, and material storage.
- Administer personnel policies and practices in accordance with established procedures.
