BASIC FUNCTION:

 

 

The Process Metallurgist I provides technical coordination and support in the QA, Rolling Mill and Melt Shop processes by overseeing process, practice and equipment monitoring, stabilization and improvements through;

  1. Understanding of Customer processes/requirements
  2. Understanding of Laboratory techniques used in steel analysis.
  3. Implementation of new technology.
  4. Planning, execution and analysis of new product trials.
  5. Technical training and development of operations personnel.
  6. Supporting process improvement and optimization.
  7. Technical Studies to support CAPEX investments.
  8. Implementing Best Practices.
  9. Participating in Technical Committees and benchmarking.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

This position is primarily responsible for developing, refining, and communicating the strategies and operating information needed to optimize productivity while ensuring the efficient and cost effective production of final products which meet or exceed the customers’ expectations. The Process Metallurgist I may prepare and/or review data sheets, diagrams, and flow charts needed for the correct and efficient operation of equipment. This will include the need to collect, interpret and extrapolate data from the production process in order to monitor current performance against established practices and make recommendations on how to improve efficiencies for the future. The incumbent must work in close cooperation with department supervisors and appropriate maintenance and operations personnel to ensure correct and proper operation of all related equipment to obtain the desired production, safety, and quality levels as needed.

 

Qualifications for this position include a four year college degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Material Science combined with 3 to 5 years of industrial experience, with direct experience with multiple strategic process improvement projects. The incumbent should have a broad technical knowledge of metallurgy and an understanding of steel manufacturing techniques used in the melting, refining, and casting of molten steel, in addition to modern rolling practices.  This also includes a good understanding of structural, bar and merchant products along with their typical applications in industry.  The successful candidate must be able to apply engineering fundamentals to the continuous improvement efforts of production and maximize the efficiency of the overall department operations. 

 

This position reports directly to the Quality Assurance Manager.  The incumbent must possess good communication skills, have the ability to articulate ideas, be detail oriented, and be comfortable dealing with associates at all levels within the organization, as well as associates from customers, suppliers and technical associations.

 

The Process Metallurgist I will assist in the preparation and completion of corrective actions and failure analyses both within and external to the facility.  This will require the candidate to understand and apply laboratory techniques used for this purpose.  Occasional travel to customer sites, industry association meetings, and other Gerdau facilities will be required.

 

 

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

  1. Work individually and in teams on process, practice, and equipment related projects at their assigned location.

 

  1. Assists Melting/Casting/Rolling operations with product quality concerns and product development initiatives.

 

  1. Assists customers with questions and/or problems regarding product quality as well as helping to organize and coordinate customer visits.

 

  1. Collect, correlate and report operational information and data for their assigned location.

 

  1. Prepare data sheets, diagrams, and flow charts for correct and efficient operation of the equipment.

 

  1. Provide preliminary engineering services for department projects and cost justification.

 

  1. Assist with preparing programs for the computer control systems.

 

  1. Review, develop, and improve operation procedures and train plant personnel and contractors in operational improvements.

 

  1. Coordinate with supervision during routine operations, and assist in solving production anomalies in the operations process.

 

  1. Assist with and participate in the process team building efforts through participation in improvement activities.

 

  1. Participate in the training and development operational supervision and hourly employees.

 

  1. Responsible for spill prevention, containment, response and clean up or assist in clean up of spills.

 

  1. Responsible for and completing all required annual safety and environmental training.

 

  1. Employee is expected to know, understand, and follow all applicable Federal, State, and Local environmental legal requirements and practices.
